Abstract: Offshore wind energy development is proceeding rapidly on the U.S. Outer Continental
Shelf. Wind energy development will soon enter the construction phase within New England and
the Mid-Atlantic and efforts are also underway to develop wind energy along the west coast of the
U.S. To date, 15 commercial offshore wind leases are active in the Northwest Atlantic shelf from
North Carolina to Massachusetts and additional lease areas are under consideration. We will
provide an overview of the development process, review the potential interactions with NOAA
fisheries mission; including the impacts on our scientific enterprise; and discuss the major
challenges and opportunities to achieving coexistence between sustainable fisheries and offshore
renewable energy.
