Attention Federally Permitted Rhode Island Lobster Fishers
The Rhode Island Division of Marine Fisheries (RIDMF) is holding an online webinar on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, 5:00 PM to answer questions about the implementation of the Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) requirements associated with the Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction Plan [fisheries.noaa.gov] (ALWTRP-FR_210827-0171). As a federal lobster trap permit holder, you are required to install an Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) approved vessel tracking device onboard your vessel in accordance with Addendum XXIX to Amendment 3 to the American Lobster Fishery Management Plan [asmfc.org] prior to any fishing trip using trap gear occurring on or after December 15, 2023. RIDMF is tasked with administering RI home ported vessel’s trackers and will be supplying eligible vessels with a one-time disbursement of an approved tracking device and associated service plan/airtime valued at $1500 to offset the costs of these regulations.
