Time Change for Lower Providence River Shellfish Management Area due to Extreme Heat

Due to the extreme heat advisory forecasted tomorrow [weather.gov], Tuesday, June 24, DEM has changed the scheduled opening of the Lower Providence River Shellfish Management Area (Area E) from 8 – 11 AM to an earlier commercial harvest window of 6 – 9 AM. The shift to an earlier timeframe is an effort to keep both shellfishers and harvested shellfish out of the extreme midday heat.

This change to the commercial harvest window is only valid for June 24 and does not apply to shore digging. DEM and partners work together to maintain Rhode Island’s reputation for a high-quality shellfish product through careful monitoring and stewardship.
